Signage & Way-Finding

Designing way-finding and identity signage for the historic home of the Soap Box Derby: Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

What is Derby Downs?

Derby Downs is the home of the Soap Box Derby. It is located in Akron, Ohio and holds the annual All-American World Championships for the Derby each July. Soap Box Derby is a gravity racing sport for kids and young adults to compete, but it is found enjoyable for all ages!

I chose to make my signage project revolve around Derby Downs because this environment has been a huge part of my life. I find the place to be very appealing, however, it seems to lack effective way-finding and visual cohesion — something I set out to improve through thoughtful design.

This project involved creating five cohesive signs to enhance navigation and visitor experience throughout the site. I designed a large gateway sign to welcome visitors to the grounds, followed by an interpretive sign that shares the rich history of the Soap Box Derby and the significance of Derby Downs. An orientation sign provides a detailed site map to help guests navigate the area, while a locational sign highlights specific landmarks on the track. Lastly, a directional sign was designed to clearly guide both foot and vehicle traffic across the property.

Each element was designed with careful consideration of materials, placement, and the spirit of the Derby. I also created a custom map to show the proposed locations of each sign, ensuring a consistent and intuitive experience from arrival to race day excitement.
